5. Automatic coding and Word Trees

  • Due No due date
  • Points None

In this exercise, you will be working with searching, automatic coding, and visualisation through word trees.

Start by performing an automatic coding of the speeches with the following key words:

  • freedom* OR libert*
  • power*
  • peace*
  • wom?n*

* truncates the word and means that any ending the word might have after the * will be included.

? is a joker that replaces any one single letter in the word.

There are several advanced search options. These can be found in the dropdown menu “Special”.

How to:

  • Search: In the menu "Query", choose “Text Search”.
  • Choose sources: In the tab "Text Search Criteria" and in the field "Search for": write the word(s) you want to search for. REMEMBER the truncation (*).
In "Search in" > "Selected items…" you can choose the sources, you wish to use. Mark all the speeches and click "Select".
  • Perform search: Click "Run Query" to perform search.
  • Add results to project: Click the button "Save results…". (By doing so, you can code the results of your search.) In the field "Name", choose an appropriate name for your new code.
NVivo will suggest for you to save the results in the location "Query Results". Change this by clicking "Select..." and choosing the folder "Codes".
  • Save search: You can save your search by clicking "Save Query…". Give the search a title and click "Save Query". You can now find your searches in the menu "SEARCH">"Queries" to the left.

Word Tree – how to:

  • After you have clicked “Run”, your results will automatically show.
    Choose “Word Tree”.
  • Experiment by clicking different sentences in the tree.
