Welcome to the introductory course “Research Data Management (RDM) for Students”, designed specifically for bachelor and master students at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) eager to develop their skills when handling data in their bachelor or master projects.

Course aim
The primary aim of this course is to equip you with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to efficiently manage research data. By the end of this course, you will not only possess a comprehensive understanding of research data management principles, but you will also be able to apply these principles to your own projects by, for example, drafting your own data management plan.

Course Objectives
In more detail, the objectives of the course are to:

  1. introduce you to key concepts related to research data management
  2. explain why good data management is important for your project and for your career.
  3. help you develop skills in organizing, documenting, and storing data efficiently and securely.
  4. introduce you to requirements, legal and ethical considerations, and responsibilities associated with managing research data.
  5. help you create a well-considered data management plan (DMP) tailored to your bachelor or master project that you can discuss with your supervisor.
  6. show you what resources and tools are available at the University of Copenhagen to help you with the management of data.

The course will take about 3 hours to complete, plus the time it will take you to draft your own data management plan.

The course is made up of 8 lessons that step-by-step guide you through the processes of research data management namely:

  1. Introduction to Research Data Management and Data Management Plans
  2. Research data – types, formats, and sizes
  3. Requirements, rights and responsibilities
  4. Ethical and legal approvals
  5. Data documentation
  6. Data storage and security
  7. Sharing data openly
  8. Data preservation

In each lesson:

  • You will be introduced to the most important concepts related to the lesson’s topic.
  • You will have access to several videos, where you will meet students and researchers, who explain how they managed different types of data in their project.
  • You’re encouraged to fill out the corresponding section of the UCPH data management plan (DMP) template for students – so that you end up with a completed DMP at the end of the course.
  • You will find quizzes to test your knowledge.
  • You will receive tips and information about tools available to support your data management at the UCPH.

We hope you will enjoy the course and find it useful!

We have also created an RDM Glossary , in case you would like to revisit commonly used terms in the course.
