Working with files
You can use file structure and memos to maintain an overview of your NVivo project. Below is described how to do it.
Files
You can document your progress, track processes and jot down observations and thoughts using "files". With that in mind it is a good idea to create a folder. It is also a good idea to consider your folder structure.
If you're working with various types of files, your structure should reflect this. This makes it easier for you to navigate your files. Moreover, a good file structure also facilitates conducting analyses based on specific files.
A file structure could look like this:
Memos
Another way to keep track of your project is by using the Memos feature, which can be found under Notes.
One option is to use the predefined Memos folder. You can create subfolders within this folder, for example, related to theory and process. It is important that you give these subfolders distinct names, both for your own sake and for others.
This is how you do it:
- Create folders from the memos folder – Right click/New folder /name the folder as above.
- Create memos within your chosen folder by using the Create ribbon tab along the tab/choose the memo icon - or alternatively as usual – you can select the correct folder and then right click in the List pane to create the new memo.
- The new memo opens up in Edit mode so that you can begin work in it. If the memo closes, double click on the memo in the list, it will re-open but you will have to ‘click to edit ’ in order to write in it.
Autosave
Autosave works differently for Mac and Windows
Autosave for PC
Autosave for Mac
Autosave is optional for mac. I you want to have your project autosaved, tick the autosave-box when creating a new projcect. Your project will then be autosaved every five minutes.
