Reference management and NVivo

Importing your references into NVivo

You can import bibliographic references and attached files from Citavi, Mendeley, EndNote, Zotero, and RefWorks. At the present time we are experiences difficulties using Mendeley, resulting in missing files and missing bibliographic informtation (February 2024).

Where the references are imported to in NVivo

  • Files attached or linked to the bibliographic reference are imported as "Data Files" in NVivo.

  • Bibliographic references without attachments or links to source files will be imported into the "Externals Folder" in NVivo.

  • The bibliographic reference information, ie. the metadata, is imported as a File Classification Sheet and called "References". Read more about how to use these metadata in the module Classification Sheets.

  • The abstracts, keywords and your notes you have made in your reference manager will also be imported and linked to the files as "Linked Memos".

  • If files referenced in your reference manager are already in your NVivo project, they will not be re-imported. Duplicates will not be created when you import the bibliographic references into NVivo. This is useful if you update your reference library and need to update your NVivo project.

Exporting your references from NVivo

  • NVivo does not provide reference styling formats—if you need to format your references for publication, we recommend you use NVivo's predefined source classifications to store bibliographical data, and then export your data to a bibliographical tool. Bibliographic data stored in NVivo as file classifications can be exported in RIS format (for Citavi, Mendeley, RefWorks and Zotero) or XML format, for EndNote).
  • You can also export your file classification sheet as a RIS or TXT format to import into any of the above-named tools.

  • You can export the entire file-classification sheet or choose one or more data files and only export the file classification information for those files.
