Documenting your work using Reports
Reports are only available on PC.
Reports are summaries of selected information from your project. You can use reports to check the progress of your project or share selected content. You can also extract selected data to a Excel sheet or XML file as a "Text report" for complementary analysis in another application.
Reports use a strange terminology and have many, many options for which elements of your project to include in the report and many options for structuring the report.
We recommend you use "Formatted Reports" (on the bottom of the blue navigation menu on the left of the Nvivo interface) to create reports using default options. Formatted Reports include templates for commonly needed reports of, for example. the text you have coded in all or selected documents (Coding summary by file), how you have applied a code throughout your project (Coding summary by code) or a summary of the content and recent activity in your project (Project Summary).
In the following we explain how to create formatted reports and text reports. You can find many more suggestions to manually create reports that meet your specific criteria in the "Videos and tutorials" section, below.
Run a formatted report
NVivo has a selection of pre-formatted reports in which you can easily select the items you want to include in your report.
- In Navigation View, expand the Reports folder and then select the Formatted Reports folder.
- In List View, double-click the report you want to run.
- If you want to select only some of your data and not create a report using all the files, codes and cases your have in your project, use the Filter Options dialog box. Choose which "Values" (elements in your project) you want to include.
- Click OK. The report results are displayed in Detail View.
Run a text report
When you run a text report, the results are not displayed on screen, they are exported to the specified file type— text file (.txt), Excel file (.xls, .xlsx) or XML file (.xml). You can open the file in other applications that support the selected format. Nvivo has some standard text reports you can choose from.
Make sure you have saved your project before running a report. Follow the steps below, and go and make yourself a cup of coffee while Nvivo creates the report.
- In Navigation View, expand the Reports folder and then select the Text Reports folder.
- In List View, double-click the report you want to run.
- If the report includes filters, the Filter Options dialog box is displayed so you can apply filters to the data.
- Click OK.
- (Optional) Choose a different location and file name.
- In the Save as type box, choose the file format for the report.
- Click Save.
