NVivo & other useful tools in review work

On the following pages you can learn more about how and when to integrate NVivo with other tools in the literature review workflow. NVivo is really good at coding text-snippets and grouping and analysing your text corpus based on the codes you create.  Where NVivo is not so helpful in the review process is reference management, screening and selecting which texts to include in your review.

  • In the module about Reference Management you can read how to import your files from your reference manager into NVivo.  You will also learn about which other information is imported along with your references, such as the abstracts, your notes and keywords. This process is a little bit different for PC and MAC users.

  • When you import from a reference manager, you automatically import a sheet of bibliographic metadata (data that describes your files, such as author, publication year, journal, etc). In the module called "Classification sheets", we introduce you to how this metadata can enrich your analysis.

  • In the module about Covidence we introduce you to the screening tool you have access to through the University of Copenhagen. A screening tool helps you sort through your references and objectively select the texts you can include in your review and thus import into NVivo.

  • Part of the elegance of NVivo, is being able to view the codes and links texts share. NVivo offers many types of basic visualisations. If you are looking for more advanced visualisations, it can be worthwhile considering other tools right at the very start of your project. Read more in the module "Visualisations"
