3. Inductive coding of text
Inductive coding is an open bottom-up method for describing and analysing your material.
In this exercise, you will be coding text sections with themes you find during reading.
How to:
- Open one of your articles in NVivo by double clicking on the file in the list view. (You will find the articles under “Data”>”Files”.)
- While reading through the article, create three themes you deem relevant for the analysis:
Mark the relevant text section. Right-click on it and choose "Code Selection" > "To New Code..". Choose a name for the code, assign a colour, describe the content of the code, and click “Done”.
Coding stripes and highlighting
- If you wish to see which codes, you have used in the document, click “Coding Stripes” on the small menu directly above the PDF.
- In the coding stripes dropdown menu, choose “All”. Your codes will now show to the right of the document. If you click on a code, all the text coded with the code in question will now be highlighted in the colour you choose for the code or in yellow (default) if you did not assign a colour.
- If you wish to highlight all text coded within the document, you once again go to the top menu directly above the PDF . Choose the tab “Highlight” and “Coding for Codes or Cases”.
You can find your codes in the menu “Coding”>”Codes”. Double-click a Code to see which text sections you have coded with the particular code.
