0. Making a new project in NVivo
The next 12 pages provide a quick start tutorial to NVivo for PC users. We'll guide you through creating a project, coding and coding hierarchies, basic queries, and working with cases and attributes.
Let's get started by making a new project in NVivo
When you open NVivo click on “Create new project” on the welcome page. Alternatively, click on “File” (top left in the blue menu) and then “New Project”
Fill out the dialogue box.
- In the "Save as" box write the name of the project. This is the name of the file. Then choose where to save the project on your computer.
- Give your the project a title of your choice. The project title will be used on any reports you generate.
- Check where the file is being saved in your directory and correct if necessary.
- Add a brief description of your project.
- Select the primary language of the text you will be working with.
Consider carefully if you want NVivo to: "Auto save project". Automatically saving, means that the programme could override any changes you make to your project which you then cannot undo.
Click "Create project".
Accessing the log of user actions
When your project opens, look at the bottom of the blue Navigation menu. There is a little "i". Click on this, to open the user log.
Unlike the PC version, content of the user log is deleted each time your close your project. To save the contents, copy them to a text document and save locally.
