3. Inductive coding of text
Inductive coding is an open bottom-up method for describing and analysing your material.
How to:
- Open one of your PDFs in NVivo by double clicking on the file. (You will find the articles under “Data”>”Files”).
- Read through the article, create three themes you deem relevant for your analysis as so:
- Mark the relevant text section by dragging your mouse over the text while holding the left button down. Right-click, and choose “Code selection". Click “Create New: Top-level code”. Choose a name for the code and click "code selection to new code”.
- To create a hierarchy in your codes, mark the relevant text selection in the PDF, right click and choose "code selection", then click on a code that you have already created and choose "Create new Child Code".
Coding stripes and highlighting
- If you wish to see which codes, you have used in the current document you are working with, look at the menu bar at the top of your PDF, make sure you click on the PDF tab, and click “Coding Stripes”. Choose “All ”. Your codes will now show to the right of the document. If you click on a code, displayed in the coding stripes, all the text coded with the code in question will now be highlighted in yellow in the document.
- If you wish to highlight all text coded within the document, you once again go to the top menu above the PDF. Choose the tab "PDF", “Highlight” and “All Coding”.
You can find your codes in the menu “Coding”>”Codes”. Double-click a code to see which text sections you have coded with the particular code.
