1. Importing documents
How to import files into NVivo.
Step 1: export your library from your referencemanager and save the file locally.
For Zotero you need to export as a RIS file and EndNote you need to export as EndNote XML.
Make sure you export the bibliographic information and the attached files.
How to import data into Nvivo from e.g. Zotero:
With NVivo open:
- Click the tab “Import”. Then click "Bibliography", choose “Zotero”, and find and select the RIS file stored locally on your computer.
- In the import dialogue that pops up, choose to:
Name your files by Author and Year
Assign to a single classification (Reference)
Import content from file attachments
Create memos from abstract, keywords and notes.
Ensure that the option “assign attribute values to memos” is unchecked.
3. Click import

How to import files manually into NVivo
- Save the files locally on your computer.
2. In Nvivo, click the tab “Import” on the top navigation ribbon. Then click “Files”, and you can now find and select your files. Do NOT create a case for each imported file.
Alternatively,
- Open “Data”>”Files” in the blue menu on the left side of the screen. You can now drag-and-drop the files from the folder on your computer into NVivo.
When you import directly from your own reference manager you get all the bibliographic information as well as the article. Importing files stored locally on your computer manually into NVivo means this bibliographic data is lost (unless it is embedded in the PDF of the article) and you will have to create a classification sheet from scratch.
