With classifications, you can find patterns in your data based on attributes, e.g., demographic data.
This exercise will describe the addition of such attributes in case classifications.
How to:
- Create classifications: Choose "Cases">"Case Classifications" in the menu to the left. Right-click in the white empty field in “Case Classifications” and choose “New Classification...”. Create a new classification and name it “Speech”. Click “OK”.
- Define attributes: Right-click the newly created classification and choose "New Attribute...". Define an attribute called "Name" and one called "Political Party".
-
Create Case Nodes and classify sources: Go to the menu "Data">"Files" and find the speeches. Mark all of them, right-click, and choose "Create As">"Created As Cases".
At "Assign to Classification", choose "Speech". Click "OK". -
Add data: Go to the menu "Cases">"Case Classifications". Open the classification by double-clicking. In the fields below, you can now add the correct information in the fields “Name” and “Political Party” (e.g., Barack Obama and Democrats).
This process can be repeated for all the speeches, thus enriching them with the relevant attribute information.
Import Classification Sheet - how to:
- Download the Excel document “Case Classification Sheet – Speech”. Open the document to see the demographic information.
- Close the document and go back to NVivo.
- In the tab "Import", click "Classification Sheet" and choose the Excel document. Click "Next".
- Choose "Classification type" : "Case Classification".
Mark all three tick-boxes. Click "Finish".
All demographic data are now attached to your cases (e.g., the inauguration speeches).
